Augmented Reality

November 24, 2009

Augmented reality (AR) is a term for a live view of a real-world environment that includes merged virtual reality elements. A simple example is watching Fox News with a ticker crawl along the bottom of the television. AR is now beginning to be utilized on the web to demonstrate and sell products and services. For example an online clothing store could use this technology to allow customers to ‘try on’ their products at home.

We have created an example of this technology so you can see it in action. All you need is a printer and a web camera, instructions are below:

  • Click here to print this image on a standard 8.5 x 11
    piece of white paper.
  • Click here to open this link, allow access to your web camera when prompted.
  • Hold up the piece of paper with the image you just printed to your webcam.
  • You should see a new image ‘magically’ appear on your screen.
