Why is HTML 5 important with relation to dynamic content on Apple Devices?

April 22, 2010

HTML5 is being developed as the next major revision of HTML (HyperText Markup Language), the core markup language of the World Wide Web. HTML5 looks to significantly reduce the need for plug-in-based programs such as Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight.

Flash is currently the go to application for displaying rich content and videos on the web. However as is widely known, popular mobile devices such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch cannot play Flash content. Apple has made a specific choice to not support Flash on their devices. According to Apple, they say that Flash can slow down their devices and is vulnerable to malware.

Enter HTML 5. HTML5 allows developers to create video that can be displayed on Apple’s devices. Content can even be tailored to show depending on the device requesting the content. For example an iPad comes along to a video site and the videos are rendered in HTML5 but when a PC user accesses the same page, the video is shown in Flash.
